The Spring Ringer at famed Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh presented one of the more unique prizes to its champions this year: a trophy that used some of the leftover mesh to repair the locker destroyed by Wyndham Clark at the 125th U.S. Open after he missed the 36-hole cut a year ago.
“They are adorable mini copies of our lockers. Everyone wanted to buy one, but sadly it had nothing to do with Wyndham,” said Oakmont’s pro emeritus Bob Ford, who played in the two-man team event with his son. “Members did joke that they should bash one of them in and send it to Wyndham.”
Golfweek has obtained a photo of the trophy from the member-guest tournament played on May 29-30. Last year, a photo of the demolished locker went viral and his childish behavior changed the narrative around the 2023 U.S. Open champion, who remains persona non grata at Oakmont. [He had a previous incident at the PGA Championship a month earlier where he threw his driver and nearly hit a volunteer.]
In a letter sent to Oakmont membership, club president John Lynch said, “Reinstatement would be contingent upon Mr. Clark fulfilling a number of specific conditions, including full repayment for damages, a meaningful contribution to a charity of the Board’s choosing, and the successful completion of counseling and/or anger management sessions.”
Rumors have been flying from various members, who may have distorted the story of whether Clark had made amends with the club. Clark is leading the U.S. Open this year at Shinnecock Hills as of Saturday afternoon.
Ford, who serves as the U.S. Open first tee starter, had just finished his long day at the course when he spoke on behalf of the club to Golfweek. “You may have heard a lot of stories. I will give you the facts,” he said. “Wyndham has done everything that was asked of him by both the USGA and Oakmont together. The lockers are fixed and he did pay for them.”
Ford couldn’t recall for sure whether Clark made a contribution to the Oakmont caddies or the Western Golf Association, but he knew the beneficiary would be caddies. He also confirmed that Clark had participated in anger management classes, which Golfweek has learned were completed online.
“He was told that if he had another public incident of anger like that, he wouldn’t be able to compete at Shinnecock,” Ford said.
Clark has been criticized in some corners for not making a full apology, or apologizing quickly enough. But he has owned it this week. During his post-round press conference after grabbing the 36-hole lead at Shinnecock, Clark said, “I’ve gotten a lot of grief since last year, rightfully so. The thing that’s unfortunate is that’s not who I am, what happened last year. I’m hoping I can win back the fans that I had or some new fans because it was a terrible incident. You know, I really feel like I can show people that I’m fun and outgoing, I’m fierce, competitive, love the game, respect the game, and I just had a bad moment. Hopefully I can win those people back.”
Efforts to reach Clark’s management company were not answered.
Golfweek had heard from multiple members that Clark’s locker hadn’t been repaired yet. Ford dismissed that as false too. Part of the confusion may stem from the fact that members did get some perverse pleasure out of showing Clark’s damaged locker to guests, so they held off on repairing it through the fall but finally repaired it during the winter.
“I think Wyndham has paid the price and he wants it behind him and we’re not anxious to stir the pot,” Ford said. “I hope he does great this week.”
