Lee Cronin has been a rising star in the horror ranks with films like “The Hole in the Ground” and “Evil Dead Rise.” He didn’t find the same amount of success with the recent “The Mummy” film, which received underwhelming critical reviews, but did do solid numbers at the box office.
Every feature Cronin has done has been in the horror genre. Oftentimes, horror directors get pigeon-holed into only making horror films. However, Cronin is hoping for the chance to branch out eventually and is even working on a script that would be a huge departure for him.
“Absolutely,” Cronin told Newsweek when asked if he would want to make a movie that wasn’t strictly horror. “It’s all it’s always been on my agenda. And it’s always going to be within this kind of little planet that I love to inhabit, which is that could include a movie like Sicario or Saving Private Ryan. You know what I mean? I think there’s always going to be serious, serious genre filmmaking bones and techniques in what I do. The first ever screenplay I wrote, which was barely a screenplay, was a kind of a horror. But the first thing I ever sold was a romantic comedy years and years ago.
“And actually, I am spec-ing out an R-rated pretty racy romantic comedy at the moment. So I am, you know, but within that, there is actually a tiny little supernatural element to the story. Very, very small. It’s five percent of what it is. It’s just it’s part of the trick of the movie.”

Romantic comedies were a dead genre for a while, but recent films like “Anyone But You” and “The Materialists” have shown that there’s still an appetite for those types of films. Cronin’s background would certainly make him an interesting choice to direct a rom-com.
He also noted some other genres he’d love to dip his toes in eventually.
“So there’s always going to be something touching on the otherworldly,” Cronin told Newsweek. “You look at Saving Private Ryan, you’re going to hell getting on that beach. That’s not the real world either. And so, I think, yeah, I think I’m interested in Westerns.
“I’m interested in war movies. I’m interested in science fiction. I’ve written comedy, although I don’t know if I trust myself to make an out-and-out comedy.”
