‘You can’t say that’: Umps step in as Aussie star Smith warned over latest DRS act

Steve Smith has been warned by umpires after being involved in another verbal exchange with the Bangladesh players.

In the ninth over of Australia’s batting innings on day one, Taskin Ahmed struck Smith’s pad, sparking a big appeal and a potential review after umpire Nitin Menon shook his head.

Taskin urged his skipper to review the decision but ultimately Najmul Hossain Shanto opted against it — despite Smith’s comments encouraging him to send the delivery upstairs.

“I’m halfway down the wicket to him, it’s going miles over,” Smith was heard saying during Bangladesh’s appeals.

As Shanto discussed the potential review with his bowler, Smith added: “Go for it”.

Both umpires then walked to the crease to give Smith a warning, with the Australian superstar responding by nodding his head with a perplexed look on his face.

“It’s a fair point from the umpires there,” Brendon Julian said during Fox Cricket’s coverage.

“You can’t say ‘that’s going miles over’… that’s what he did say. This is what (the umpires) are saying, just leave that to the fielding side.”

Kerry O’Keeffe added: “I know in the 70s if you had done that, it would be grievous bodily harm.”

It’s not the first time Smith has been captured on the stump mic in an exchange while batting, having engaged in a verbal stoush with Litton Das during the first Test.

With Smith attempting to mount a rescue mission in Australia’s second innings, Bangladesh believed Smith had knicked a leg-side delivery from spinner Taijul Islam.

Following the umpire’s not out decision, Smith said: “Use it. Go on. Do it. Go on, use it… Waste another one (review). Do what you want. Do your thing.”

Wicketkeeper Das, who delivered an impressive effort to reel in the potential catch replied: “You bat. You just bat”.

“I’m batting,” Smith replied, to which Das responded: “Just bat”.

“Na, I’ll do what I want,” Smith continued. “I can do what I want.”

Following Smith’s most recent incident at the crease, Fox Cricket’s experts all believed the superstar batsmen should remain quiet during potential reviews.

“Steve Smith is saying to the fielders, go on ‘Review it. Review it.’ In Darwin, I don’t like that either,” Mike Hussey said.

Meanwhile, Brendon Julian added: “The batter should not be saying anything at all.

“If Australia was bowling and an opposition batsman was saying that toi them, I don’t think they would be too happy with that. They would be climbing into them.”
