Why Jeremy Jacquet didn’t start for France against Belgium as Liverpool get fitness update

Liverpool centre-back Jeremy Jacquet has been dropped for tonight’s match between France and Belgium due to an injury.

The Frenchman joined the Reds from Rennes this summer and has settled well on Merseyside, starting regularly next to Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Andoni Iraola’s back line.

He picked up where he left off when he joined up with France for this international break, too, playing the full duration of both Les Bleus’ matches against Belgium and Italy and only conceding once in that time.

Jacquet had been expected to reprise his role at the Stade de France tonight for the rematch with Belgium, but he has been forced out of the lineup.

Per reporting from journalist Julien Laurens, that is due to a “little” injury, and the player has been deemed fit enough to feature on the bench, suggesting his issue is not particularly severe.

Manchester United’s Leny Yoro has been promoted to the starting lineup in Jacquet’s place, making his senior France debut in doing so. He partners Maxence Lacroix of Chelsea.

Following tonight’s match, Jacquet will return to Merseyside to prepare for this weekend’s crunch Premier League match against Manchester City. Andoni Iraola will provide an update on his fitness ahead of that match.

For Belgium, Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia gets the nod once again after impressing on his full debut last week, in teh 1-0 defeat by France.

Zinedine Zidane’s France sit atop the Nations League A Group 1 table coming into this match, one point clear of Belgium.
