In honor of Memorial Day on Monday, communities across Connecticut are gearing up to commemorate the holiday with parades, ceremonies, flyovers and the placing of U.S. flags on graves.

The holiday honors soldiers who have fought in the U.S. military and died protecting and defending the nation. Celebrated on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day’s early traditions of simply placing U.S. flags on graves have endured and evolved to actions, including reading of the fallen’s names and collecting nonperishable food items and monetary donations to support local veterans.
