1,401 not out for Boro super fan Nickpublished at 20:53 GMT
HT: West Brom 0-1 Middlesbrough
How far does your loyalty stretch for your team?
How about not missing a competitive match for nearly 30 years?
Middlesbrough fan Nick Waites brought up 1,400 consecutive games in their 3-1 FA Cup defeat by Fulham last Saturday – he has not missed a league game since 1992.
His current run includes all league, FA Cup, League Cup and European matches, but not pre-season friendlies.
There were times during the pandemic he was not allowed into grounds but otherwise he has not missed a single minute.
“I’ve been very close a few times with illness,” he told BBC Radio Tees. “There’s a few times when no doubt I probably wouldn’t have passed the fitness test if I’d had one.”
Waites recalled the time he had a hernia operation on a Wednesday and still managed to make it to Leicester on the Saturday to cheer on Boro.
“I don’t know how I managed to get on the train, even less of an idea of how I got into the ground, but I did,” he said.
It is 1,401 for the Boro super fan tonight and now he is targeting 1,500 consecutive matches.
“I’ve got to have a go haven’t I? The target is in sight,” he added.
