I saw Turkey lose their opening group game with Australia when I was planning to write an article about how wonderfully replenished the squad was in attacking areas, with as many as five potential No. 10 options.
It made me dream of the 1994 World Cup, held exclusively in this country when most competing nations had a playmaker with either one of two haircuts. Option one being fuzzy and option two being lank.
Anyway, this is all well and good but if you don’t have pace in wide areas and if you don’t have someone up top who doesn’t act like a fire cracker has gone off nearby when the ball arrives at his feet, you’ve got no chance.
