MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Three men have been arrested after an attempted break in at the Penal Farm at Shelby Farms, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
Jamie Rusan, 24, Carloss Wilkins, 31, and Ladarius Munn, 31 have been charged with a long list of felonies following the incident at the Inmate Reception Center (IRC) off Dovecrest Road.
On Tuesday, June 23, Shelby County Sheriff’s detectives were on surveillance duty when they noticed a silver Acura MDX heading south on Sycamore View around 2 a.m.
Records state that the vehicle came to a stop at the intersection of Sycamore View and Dovecrest Road. Detectives noticed that two people exited the vehicle dressed in all black or dark colored clothing carrying several bags each.
The vehicle then left the area and went in the direction of Mullins Station Road.
Detectives watched both suspects lay down abruptly as a marked Shelby County Sheriff’s vehicle drove by the area. Once the SCSO vehicle had passed, the two proceeded on foot towards the IRC building when a helicopter flew over, causing them to lay down again, according to an affidavit.
Moments later, one of the suspects stood back up and crossed over the Greenline towards the IRC building while the other remained at the trees near the Greenline.
According to records, one of the suspects cut a hole in the fence with bolt cutters and successfully breached the fence by cutting a hole large enough for a man to fit through it.
The suspect then went back to the wooded area while the other suspect made his way into the breach in the fence and entered the facility.
Meanwhile, the other suspect returned to the wooded area, grabbed three bags, and carried them to the fence where the bags were handed to the other suspect.
Detectives soon converged on their location. The first suspect was identified as Carloss Wilkins was apprehended in the woods with 2 bags of a wide variety of contraband and a pair of bolt cutters.
The other suspect was apprehended and identified as Ladarius Munn inside the perimeter of the Penal Farm fence line with 3 bags of contraband in his possession.
Narcotics detectives ran the license plate info of the silver Acura MDX, found the address, and executed a search warrant.
After detectives breached the door, Jamie Rusan was detained without incident while a systematic search was performed.
Detectives found an identical bag to the ones found during the arrest of Munn and Wilkins in the front seat of the Acura MDX in addition to several empty boxes of Newport cigarettes and an empty plastic bag box.
SCSO detectives ran Rusan’s information and it showed that he was out on diversion for an aggravated robbery charge. In addition, deputies discovered that Rusan’s driver’s license had been revoked.
Detectives found cigarette lighters, Newport cigarettes, vapes, cellphones and chargers, marijuana, tobacco wraps, and narcotics among other contraband in the bags at the Penal Farm.
Carloss Wilkins is being held on a $600,000 bond. He is expected to appear in court on June 29.
Ladarius Munn is being held on a $250,000 bond. He is expected to appear in court on June 30.
Jamie Rusan’s bond information has not been posted yet. He is expected to appear in court on June 29.
