Success stories in Bollywood often begin with years of struggle, rejection and unnoticed appearances. Long before becoming one of the industry’s most bankable stars, Shahid Kapoor was just another young dancer trying to make his mark in the film industry. Today, the actor is known for delivering blockbuster films and reportedly charging massive fees for projects, but his journey started from the background of iconic Bollywood songs

Karisma Kapoor recalls Shahid Kapoor’s early days

The actor’s inspiring journey was recently discussed on the upcoming episode of India’s Best Dancer Season 5. During the episode, Karisma Kapoor praised Shahid, who is currently gearing up for Cocktail 2 alongside Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna. She talked about his transformation from a background dancer to a Bollywood superstar.
The emotional moment came after contestant Prince revealed that he, too, had once worked as a background dancer before entering the reality show. Karisma immediately connected his story with Shahid Kapoor’s struggles and recalled how the actor had once danced behind her in a film song.

Remembering those days, Karisma shared that Shahid had appeared as a background dancer in one of her songs and has now reached incredible heights in the industry. She added that she could see the same dedication and passion in contestant Prince.

Shahid Kapoor once danced behind Bollywood stars

Before stepping into acting, Shahid Kapoor was part of choreographer Shiamak Davar’s dance troupe in the 1990s. During that phase, he appeared in several Bollywood songs as a background dancer.
One of his most recognised appearances was in the song Le Gayi from Dil To Pagal Hai, which starred Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor. Eagle-eyed fans later spotted Shahid dancing in the background during the energetic number. He was also seen in the song Kahin Aag Lage Lag Jaaye from Taal starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. At the time, few would have imagined that the young dancer in the background would one day become one of Bollywood’s leading stars.

From rejection to Bollywood stardom

Shahid Kapoor made his acting debut in 2003 with Ishq Vishk opposite Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasurywala. The romantic drama turned him into an overnight sensation and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
However, Shahid’s path to success was far from easy. In an old interview with Hindustan Times, the actor revealed that he had faced rejection in nearly 100 auditions during the early years of his career. He admitted that there were times when he did not even have enough money for food or travel to auditions.

Speaking about his first salary, Shahid shared that he earned only Rs 1.5 lakh for his debut film. He said the amount was small, but enough for him to survive during those difficult days. He also recalled being advised to focus on opportunities instead of money at the beginning of his journey.

Shahid Kapoor is now among Bollywood’s highest-paid actors

Over the years, Shahid Kapoor proved his versatility with films like Jab We Met, Kaminey, Haider, Udta Punjab and Kabir Singh. His performances established him as one of the strongest actors of his generation.

Now, Shahid is reportedly among the highest-paid stars in Bollywood. According to Pinkvilla, the actor may receive around Rs 45 crore for the second season of Farzi, making it the biggest pay cheque of his career so far. From dancing unnoticed behind Bollywood superstars to becoming one of the industry’s biggest names himself, Shahid Kapoor’s journey remains one of persistence, patience and hard-earned success.

According to GQ India and publicly available data, Shahid Kapoor has built a massive fortune estimated to be around Rs 300 crore over the years.
