The ATP clay court season has begun this week in Houston and as usual the field is filled with American players looking to capture a title on home soil. With none of the very top players in the world in the draw and no clay specialists, it feels like it’s anybody’s title to win, and the last few days of the tournament should provide plenty of tight matches and high quality tennis.
ATP Houston Day 3 Predictions
Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs Alex Bolt
Head-to-head: first meeting
Etcheverry finally won his first career title this year in Rio and looking at the draw he has a good opportunity to add a second here in Houston. On smaller clay events, he will always be a strong contender, and Bolt is very unlikely to pose any meaningful resistance here on a surface he has never been comfortable in and where he never got any big results.
Prediction: Etcheverry in 2
Thiago Agustin Tirante vs Mackenzie McDonald
Head-to-head: first meeting
McDonald played some excellent tennis to beat Jenson Brooksby in the first round, but at the moment Tirante is definitely the better player of the two, especially on clay. That said, the clay in Houston tends to play faster than usual and McDonald has the home advantage, so it should be a very close match decided by small details.
Prediction: Tirante in 3
Ben Shelton vs Zhizhen Zhang
Head-to-head: Shelton 1-1 Zhang
Shelton might be the top seed, but clay is easily his worst surface, and he actually lost in straights when the pair faced in Rome in 2024. To make things worse, Shelton had a very poor run in the North American Masters and will be low on confidence right now. That said, Zhang hasn’t been playing well himself and all things considered Shelton should still find a way to prevail here.
Prediction: Shelton in 3
