The cut-off marks are normalised because the RRB Group D Computer-Based Test (CBT) is conducted in multiple shifts over several days, and the difficulty level of question papers can vary from one shift to another. Normalisation ensures that candidates are evaluated fairly regardless of the shift they appeared in.
For example: Candidate A appears in a tougher shift and scores 70 raw marks and candidate B appears in an easier shift and scores 72 raw marks.
Without normalisation, candidate B would rank higher. However, if the first shift was significantly more difficult, Candidate A’s score may be increased after normalisation, while candidate B’s score may remain the same or even decrease slightly. This places both candidates on a common scale.
