San Diego County is experiencing classic “May gray” weather that’s likely to continue through Memorial Day as persistent high pressure traps cool, moist air along the coast, producing clouds that creep ashore in late afternoon, the National Weather Service says.
The cloudiness will be especially noticeable Tuesday through Thursday due to minor coastal eddies that will help push the moisture onto local beaches and into canyons and foothills off to the east.
San Diego’s daytime high is forecast to be in the 69- to 71-degree range through Thursday, then will turn a degree or two cooler into early next week, which is common this time of year.
There have been few surprises this month. The average daily temperature at San Diego International Airport from May 1 through May 17 was 64.9 degrees, which is 0.4 degrees above average. The airfield recorded 0.22 inches of rain, about 0.02 inches below normal. Significant rain is not expected into next week, but it is possible the marine layer will produce some drizzle at the coast.
