Supernova’ Plot Synopsis Surfaces Online

While plenty of hype has been generated for Toho’s upcoming Godzilla Minus Zero, the first direct sequel to a Toho Godzilla film in 23 years, there is also another Godzilla movie franchise that is getting a new entry in 2027. The Monsterverse had a new entry in the franchise with the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters this year, and next March will see the next film in the series: Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Much of the plot details of the upcoming Kaiju action flick have been kept under wraps, though a new synopsis has been released.

New marketing materials have been revealed for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova as part of the China Licensing Expo. Part of this promotional material is a new synopsis that, while vague, teases another intense clash between titans and new consequences for the events of the previous films. The synopsis can be read below:

“As the sixth installment in the ‘MonsterVerse’ film series, this movie will delve deeper into the delicate relationship of coexistence and trust between humans and prehistoric behemoths. Meanwhile, the earth-shaking monster storm triggered by the epic clash between Godzilla and Kong, the two guardians of Earth’s ecological balance, will once again sweep across the big screen!”

With every new Godzilla film, whether from Toho or Legendary, there are rampant rumors about what Kaijus may make an appearance as another monster for Godzilla or Kong to fight. The first Godzilla vs Kong movie featured a new iteration of Mechagodzilla, and the second film in the series, subtitled The New Empire, featured new and original Kaiju in The Skar King and Shimo. Now, with Supernova, it’s hard not to take the context clues of the film’s title and assume that the next big bad for Godzilla and Kong to take on is SpaceGodzilla.

Godzilla in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Warner Bros.

For those unfamiliar with the original Toho films, SpaceGodzilla is a monster that appeared in the Heisei era film Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla, in which the Kaiju was created as a clone of Godzilla that evolved in space. The creature’s origin from Godzilla’s DNA, mixed with its space background, make it feel like the perfect candidate for Supernova. Add to that the fact there was a filing in screenplay credits for the movie that mentions SpaceGodzilla by name, it’s hard to deny at this point that the Kaiju will be the next big threat of the series.

It will be interesting to see how Kong plays into the narrative, especially since The New Empire ends with the giant ape taking over from the Skar King as the ruler of his species in Hollow Earth. There is also the matter of how much of the film could actually be set in space, or if Space Godzilla’s involvement will be saved for the third act of the movie, in a similar fashion to Mechagodzilla. The Monsterverse is in an interesting place, with movies being released at the same time as Toho’s Godzilla movies, with the Japanese film production company looking to make an interconnected universe of its own.
