As the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League approaches in 2026, speculation about a possible captaincy change at Kolkata Knight Riders has been widely shared across social media platforms. A viral claim suggested that veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane had stepped down as the team’s captain, sparking concern among supporters with the tournament only weeks away.

However, upon closer examination, it has been revealed that the circulating post is fake and misleading. So far, there has been no official announcement of a change in the leadership at the top.

Fact Check Is Ajinkya Rahane Stepping Down From KKR s Captaincy Role Ahead Of IPL 2026

How Did The Controversy Start?

The controversy erupted after a social media account posted Rahane’s statement on social media, which was dated March 12, 2026. In the post, it was written that Rahane had decided to relinquish his role to allow the team to groom a new leader for the upcoming domestic season.

The language used in the post appeared professional, leading many to believe that it was an official announcement from his Instagram account. The post quickly gained traction, with several users sharing the post without verifying its authenticity.

However, a review of the official social media accounts of Ajinkya Rahane and Kolkata Knight Riders found no evidence of any announcement about a captaincy resignation. Neither the franchise nor Rahane has issued any statement suggesting a leadership change.

Further checks revealed that the viral image circulating online was a manipulated screenshot created to spread confusion and generate unnecessary speculation ahead of the new season.

How Did The Post Come Into Social Media?

Tracing the source of the misleading post showed that it originated from an edited version of a legitimate statement Rahane had shared earlier. In 2025, Rahane publicly stepped down as captain of the Mumbai cricket team in domestic cricket.

The viral post reused that original message almost word for word, but replaced references to “Mumbai” with “Kolkata Knight Riders.” By altering the team name and context, the old statement was repackaged to falsely suggest that Rahane had resigned from his IPL captaincy.

Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour.
With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I’ve decided not to continue in the captaincy role.
I remain fully committed to giving my best…
